College Essay Writing

At my association’s conference that I attended earlier this month (IECA), I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with college admissions representatives from respected institutions (e.g., Boston College, Tufts, Allegheny…etc.), varying in size and selectivity, shedding some light on how they read their applications.

Although there were some similarities in what they expressed there were also differences, which allows you to come to the conclusion that each school is its own entity, making its own decisions on what students they are looking for and how they evaluate their application packages.

College Essay Writing
• Take advantage of the additional information essay if needing to explain transcript trends or something that may be going on in your life that you feel is important to communicate to the admissions staff
• Highly selective schools – Essays are the way colleges can sift down to their acceptance pool. 90% who apply academically fit, the essays further sift it down.
• Own who you are – It’s not about who you think the colleges want you to be but about who you are
• Think critically about the institution when writing the supplemental essays
• Can write a why that school essay as your additional information essay to show how you connect to that school, even if that school doesn’t have a “Why this school” essay
