From Dream School to Right School: College Counselors That Help NJ Students Find Clarity, Confidence, and Fit
Student Snapshot
Andrea, a student from Southern New Jersey, came to us with a 97 GPA and a strong academic record that included Honors and several AP courses. She was deeply committed to the sciences and had a long-term goal of attending medical school. Throughout high school, Andrea worked at various jobs consistently starting in 9th grade and volunteered with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and SOS in Brock County, supporting families in need. Her family was focused on securing a strong academic and social fit while keeping total costs at or below $45,000 per year. Ideally, Andrea hoped to attend a school in the Southeast within a short plane flight from home.
The Consulting Challenge
When we first met Andrea, her biggest challenge was aligning her vision for college with her father’s firm financial parameters. She had fallen in love with the idea of attending a Southern university, particularly the University of Miami, and was eager to pursue that dream wholeheartedly. Her father, meanwhile, was deeply concerned about affordability and did not want Andrea to commit to a college that exceeded the family’s financial comfort zone.
Andrea’s worry was that financial limitations might prevent her from attending what she saw as her “dream school.” Her father’s worry was committing to a financial obligation that was not sustainable. Finding the balance between aspiration and practicality required honest conversations, careful planning, and time.
Our Approach to Finding Ideal Colleges
From our earliest admissions counseling sessions, it was clear that Andrea was extraordinary. She possessed a level of independence and maturity well beyond her years. Working throughout high school while maintaining strong academics and meaningful service commitments demonstrated responsibility, resilience, and empathy, qualities that align beautifully with her goal of becoming a physician.
As we explored colleges together, a few themes emerged. Andrea was drawn to vibrant campuses with strong school spirit, warm climates, and respected science programs that would prepare her for medical school. She fell in love with the energy and prestige of the University of Miami and strongly considered applying Early Decision. However, Early Decision is binding, and given the financial constraints, that route posed significant risk.
To help Andrea fully understand the implications, we encouraged her to contact the admissions office directly to ask whether a student could withdraw from a binding Early Decision agreement due to financial preference rather than demonstrated need. The answer confirmed what we suspected, she could not. That pivotal moment helped her see the situation more clearly. As a result, she chose to apply Early Action instead, keeping her options open.
Building a Comprehensive College Admissions Strategy
In building her list, we created a balanced mix of Southern universities and financially sound options, including strong public institutions. We intentionally included Rutgers University, her in-state flagship, even though she initially dismissed it. Over time, and through campus visits, deeper research into pre-med advising, and conversations about long-term outcomes, Andrea’s perspective began to shift. She started to see that strong pre-med preparation, research access, and affordability could coexist.
As decision time approached, Andrea’s maturity shone through. She began to fully grasp the financial piece that had once felt abstract. A campus visit to Rutgers changed everything. She connected with the energy, saw the academic rigor firsthand, and realized she could thrive there both socially and academically and it was the perfect financial fit.
Results: Acceptances + Final Decision
College Acceptances
Andrea was admitted to a strong range of universities aligned with her interests, including:
• University of South Carolina
Pennsylvania State University
• University of Tampa
• Rutgers University
• She was waitlisted at University of Miami and was not admitted to University of Florida, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida State University.
Final Choice
After thoughtful consideration, Andrea chose Rutgers University. In the end, it offered the right combination of rigorous science coursework, strong pre-med preparation, vibrant campus life, and financial responsibility. During her visit, she felt the shift, from resisting the idea to genuinely seeing herself there.
Today, Andrea is thriving. She has embraced campus life, feels confident in her academic path, and is building the foundation she needs for medical school, all while knowing she made a financially wise decision for her family.
Takeaways for Families
• Financial clarity must be part of the conversation from the very beginning. Dreams and practicality can coexist, but they require honest planning.
• Early Decision should only be used when both emotional and financial commitment are aligned.
• Sometimes the right school isn’t the first one a student falls in love with, it’s the one that supports their long-term success.
