College Consultants Providing Sound Advice and Strategies that Drive Results
Student Snapshot
Amelia, a student from Hudson County, New Jersey, came to us with an exceptional weighted GPA of 100.55 and the most rigorous curriculum available at her private parochial high school, which did not offer AP or IB courses. With wide-ranging academic interests that included psychology and linguistics, Amelia was deeply involved in creative and intellectual pursuits such as the school newspaper, Model UN, drama club, School of Rock, and extensive songwriting. She also participated in summer writing programs and completed an internship with a mental health startup app. Her family was open to cost and focused primarily on finding a college with the right academic and social environment where she could truly thrive.
The Consulting Challenge
When we first met Amelia, her biggest challenge was not a lack of options, but almost too many. With strong interests spanning psychology, linguistics, writing, music, and the arts, she needed a college list broad enough to honor her curiosity while still offering direction and clarity. She was also undecided about the type of institution that would feel like the right fit, initially open to colleges anywhere in the country as long as they leaned liberal and were located in or near a city rather than a remote setting.
The family’s primary concern was ensuring that Amelia landed in an environment where she would be both challenged and supported. They wanted confidence that she would not only succeed academically, but also feel engaged socially and creatively. For Amelia., the pressure to “get it right” was real – she wanted a school that would allow her many talents to coexist rather than forcing her to choose just one version of herself.
Our Approach to Finding Ideal Colleges
The personalized college consulting process began with in-depth conversations focused on understanding Amelia as a learner, thinker, and person. It quickly became clear that she is a deep, reflective thinker and an outstanding writer who communicates with nuance and emotional insight, but she is also someone prone to overthinking when faced with big decisions. Together, we explored how different academic environments, campus cultures, and locations might either energize or overwhelm her.
As Our Consultations Progressed, Patterns Emerged
Amelia began to see that while she was capable of succeeding in many different settings, she felt most excited by colleges that offered strong psychology programs alongside vibrant arts communities. She wanted the freedom to pursue her academic interests seriously while continuing her lifelong commitment to music and creative expression. This realization became a key anchor as we moved from exploration to refinement of her list of schools
Crafting the Final List of Colleges
Initially, we cast a wide geographic net, considering colleges across the country. Over time, however, Amelia’s preferences sharpened. She gravitated toward primarily Northeastern institutions (which were not too far of a drive from her Hudson County home), with just one school in the Pacific Northwest and one in the Midwest remaining on her list. Campus culture, access to cities, and intellectual energy became increasingly important, and she found herself especially drawn to schools where students were both academically driven and creatively engaged.
A pivotal moment came as Amelia fell in love with the University of Michigan. While she was excited by its academic strength and campus life, she was also nervous about the admissions timeline, particularly because early decision (ED) was important to her, and Michigan did not offer ED at that time. We worked through strategic application planning together, ultimately deciding on an Early Action approach paired with an Early Decision II option so she could preserve flexibility while still demonstrating commitment.
Amelia applied to a thoughtful, balanced list that included American University, George Washington University, Dickinson, Villanova, Boston University, Boston College, the University of Washington, the University of Michigan, Wesleyan, the University of Maryland, and Northeastern. Each college was chosen for a specific academic, social, or cultural reason aligned with her goals.
Results: Acceptances + Final Decision
Acceptances
Amelia applied to many selective institutions that reflected her strengths and interests, but given that she applied Early Decision 2 to Boston College and their admissions response came in relatively early, once she was admitted to Boston College she had to rescind all of her other applications, therefore not being able to hear her admissions decisions form her remaining colleges. She was able to hear from all of her early action schools, where she was admitted, which are listed below.
• American University
• University of Maryland
• Boston College, applying Early Decision 2
• Northeastern University
Amelia also ultimately applied to Boston College through the Early Decision II round and was thrilled to be accepted.
Final Choice: Boston College
Amelia chose Boston College (BC) because it offered the right combination of academic rigor, intellectual curiosity, campus culture, and proximity to a city, while still providing a cohesive and supportive community. She felt confident that BC would allow her to pursue psychology seriously while continuing her involvement in music and the arts.
Now at Boston College, Amelia is settling in well, finding friends, engaging socially, and adjusting to a highly accomplished peer group. While the academic caliber of her classmates was initially an adjustment, it has ultimately reinforced that she is in an environment that challenges her to grow.
