Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. This is one of our favorite mottos at Signature College Counseling. We strive to destress college admissions by breaking down our students’ journeys into workable bite-sized pieces, taking advantage of every opportunity we can to keep them moving forward toward the end goal: becoming a college student. Your winter break is an excellent opportunity for you to take our motto to heart and make meaningful progress towards your own college goals. Whether you’re a junior getting ready to apply next year or a sophomore laying the groundwork, winter break offers uninterrupted time to prepare for what lies ahead.
Practical Ways to Get Ready for College Life
Dive into Some Strategic Reading
Reading is an underrated but powerful way to prepare for college. It builds your vocabulary and reading comprehension (hello standardized tests!), strengthens analytical thinking, and demonstrates intellectual curiosity. These are qualities colleges value. Here are some ideas to try:
Pick Up Books Related to Your Interests
Whether you’re passionate about science, history, or creative writing, find books that deepen your knowledge in these areas.
Read the News
Stay informed about current events to broaden your understanding of the world and develop your own individual perspectives. If you’re leaning towards a major area, read articles pertaining to that area of interest to build your understanding of it.
Explore College-Level Materials
If you’re leaning toward a specific major, read introductory textbooks or industry articles to familiarize yourself with the field.
Not sure where to start? Speak with your librarian or local bookstore staff. They can help you find engaging reads in your areas of interest.
Set New Goals for Organization and Independence
Whether you’ve just started high school or are wrapping up your senior year, there is always room to improve how you balance your academics, extracurriculars, and personal responsibilities so you are better prepared for a demanding college schedule. Consider some of the following:
Use a Calendar
Whether you like pencil and paper or you prefer the digital world, using a calendar is an excellent way to remember events and plan for bigger projects. Start with the fun stuff and add birthdays of family and friends or a vacation. Next you can add homework due dates and practice schedules – you get the idea. One of the most common reasons students give for not hitting a deadline is “I forgot.” Help your future self by calendaring your responsibilities now.
Household Chores
Do you do your own laundry yet? Can you balance your bank account? If not, now is a great time to start. Eventually, when you’re away at college this will be your responsibility, take the time to learn now to start adulting and show your family you’re ready to take the next step. These small tasks can build confidence and prepare you for the independence of college life.
Explore New Ways to Engage at School and in Your Community
Colleges love to see students who are involved and passionate. Take advantage of your break by identifying ways to stretch yourself.
Try Something New
Is there a club you’ve been curious about joining or a hobby you’ve wanted to pick up? Now’s the time to explore it.
Volunteer
Look for holiday-themed volunteering opportunities, like helping at food drives, wrapping presents for families in need, or participating in community clean-up projects.
Use this time to brainstorm ways to make your extracurricular activities more meaningful and aligned with your interests.
Research Colleges and Careers
Take some time to explore schools and programs that interest you. Use tools like college search engines, virtual campus tours, or informational videos. If you’re undecided about your major, learn about different career paths. Consider the following:
Talk to Family, Family-Friends, and Mentors
Ask them about their jobs, how they got there, and what they love about their work.
Shadow Professionals
If possible, spend a day observing someone in a career you’re curious about.
This kind of research can inspire your college list and give you a clearer sense of direction.
Enjoy and Recharge
Remember, winter break is also a time to rest. College preparation is important, but balance is key. Be sure to take time to:
• Spend quality moments with family and friends
• Engage in stress-free hobbies you love
• Reflect on your achievements this year and think about what you’re excited for in the next
