When Does FAFSA Open for 2025-2026?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a crucial tool for high school students planning to attend college. It determines eligibility for federal grants, loans, and work-study programs, and is used by over 80% of colleges to award institutional aid. We always advise our students to fill out the form as soon as the period opens to get a jump on financial aid. Unfortunately, for the 2025-2026 academic year, the open date is later than usual.

New Release Date

Traditionally, the FAFSA form has been available on October 1 each year, allowing students to get a head start on their financial aid applications. However, for the 2025-2026 cycle, the U.S. Department of Education announced that the full release of the FAFSA will be delayed until December 1, 2024. This two-month delay is part of a new phased approach aiming to ensure a smoother and more reliable application process.

Why the Delay?

Last year’s FAFSA rollout was also delayed due to a major overhaul mandated by Congress. It was riddled with technical glitches that made processing the forms difficult. Many colleges had to roll back deadlines as a result. To avoid a repeat of these problems, the Department of Education is taking a more cautious approach with the 2025-2026 FAFSA opening it up two months later. By testing the form with a smaller group first, they aim to ensure that the system is fully functional and user-friendly when it becomes available to the wider public on December 1.

Beginning on October 1, 2024, the 2025-2026 FAFSA will be available to a limited number of students and institutions who will test the form and provide feedback. This group will gradually expand throughout October and November, allowing the Department of Education to identify and fix any technical issues before the form is fully released to all students.

What This Means for Students and Families

While the delayed release may cause some initial concern, the phased approach should make for a better experience overall. While a December 1 release date means you won’t be able to apply as early as usual, it should also mean you’re less likely to encounter technical issues and additional delays in receiving your financial aid package. If given the option, agree to be a test case. You may be one of a small group of students invited to participate in the testing phase starting in October. If you’re selected, it’s an opportunity to be part of the solution, and help to make the system work better for when it is fully released to all. And don’t worry if you make a mistake. One of the major improvements planned for the 2025-2026 FAFSA is the ability to make corrections immediately after submitting your application. This was not possible last year and resulted in significant delays.

How You Can Prepare for Filling Out the FAFSA

Gather your information early

Even though the FAFSA form won’t be released until December, you can start gathering what you need now. This includes tax returns and bank statements.

Check your email

College financial aid advisors will be a critical resource during this period. They can provide guidance on timing, what to expect, and how to complete the form once it’s available.

Be ready to act in December

Once the FAFSA is released to everyone on December 1, complete it as soon as possible. For many schools, aid is limited and dispensed on a first come first served basis. Don’t wait.

While the delayed opening of the 2025-2026 FAFSA seems inconvenient, it is intended to create a better, more reliable experience for students and their families.
